A 175-kilometre-long restaurant street: where should you go on Peipsi Toidu Tänav 2026?
For two days in August, the shore of Lake Peipus will become one of Estonia’s longest and most distinctive restaurant streets. 15–16 August 2026Around 40 pop-up restaurants, home cafés, and stops offering local food experiences will open along the approximately 175-kilometre route from Vasknarva to Setomaa.
Peipsi Toidu Tänav 175 km is not a conventional festival where all vendors gather in one square. The restaurants are located in home gardens, harbours, villages, community centres and along roads. Visitors choose which area to stop in, which dishes to try and how much of the route to cover.
When does Peipsi Toidu Tänav 2026 take place?
Peipsi Toidu Tänav will take place in 2026:
- on Saturday, 15 August;
- on Sunday, 16 August.
The event begins on Saturday at 11.00 and ends on Sunday at 17.00. In previous years, the restaurants have been open on Saturday at 11.00–21.00 and on Sunday at 11.00–17.00, but before setting off, it is worth checking each restaurant’s exact opening hours on the official map.
The latest information about the event and restaurants is available on the official Facebook page of Peipsi Toidu Tänav 175 km.
Admission to the festival area is free. Food and drinks must be purchased separately at each restaurant.
What is Peipsi Toidu Tänav 175 km?
Peipsi Toidu Tänav is a food festival spanning the Peipsimaa region, focusing on local ingredients, the region's people and the culinary traditions of the shores of Lake Peipus.
For two days, pop-up restaurants open in places where there may not normally be anywhere to eat at all. Visitors may be welcomed:
- in home gardens and on farms;
- in harbours and lakeside areas;
- in village centres and community halls;
- tourism farms;
- seasonal restaurants;
- along highways and village roads;
- at local producers.
For 2026, approximately 40 two-day restaurants have been announced along the route from Vasknarva to Setomaa. In addition to food, several locations may host concerts, exhibitions, workshops, and other local activities. Food and drinks from the Lake Peipsi region can also be purchased to take away from restaurants and producers.
There is no need to visit all 40 restaurants, and it is probably not possible to do so in one day. The idea of the event is to choose an area that suits you and create your own personal culinary journey.
What can you eat on Peipsi Toidu Tänav?
Peipsi cuisine is not just about fish. Local food reflects everything that Lake Peipus, forests, fields, gardens, marshes and bogs have to offer.
Menus may include:
- fried, grilled, smoked and marinated fish from Lake Peipus;
- fish soups;
- fish dumplings;
- fish pies;
- game and meat dishes;
- wild mushrooms;
- local vegetables;
- Peipsi onions and cucumbers;
- berries and herbs;
- homemade pies and baked goods;
- desserts prepared according to old family recipes.
Fish served may include vendace, pike, zander, bream, perch and burbot. Meat dishes may use beef, lamb, goat, rabbit or game.
In addition to traditional dishes, the festival also offers more daring flavor combinations. In previous years, these have included cucumber and chanterelle ice cream, various mushroom dishes, and modern interpretations of old recipes from the Lake Peipsi region.
Each restaurant's exact menu will be published on the official event map.

Verska Resto
A suitable stop in the southern part of the route for those who want to combine a food trip with a visit to Värska and Setomaa.

on the official map of Peipsi Toidu Tänav 2026.
Where should you go on Peipsi Toidu Tänav?
The 175-kilometre route can be broadly divided into several areas. It is best to choose one and visit the restaurants located within that area.
Vasknarva and the Alutaguse region
Vasknarva is located at the northern end of the route. This area is particularly suitable for visitors arriving from Ida-Virumaa or Narva.
The food tour can be combined with a walk, a lakeside break, or exploring the nature of Alutaguse. For a single day, it is best to choose a few restaurants located close to one another rather than immediately attempting to travel the entire route south.
Mustvee, Kasepää and the villages around Lake Peipus
Mustvee and its surroundings are among the most suitable areas for those who want to experience the classic atmosphere of Peipsimaa.
Here, the traditions of fishing villages, local fish dishes, Peipsi onions, vegetables, homemade baked goods and different cultures come together.
The advantage of the Mustvee area is that several stops may be located relatively close to one another. This makes it possible to try several different menus in a single day without spending most of the time in the car.
Kallaste, Alatskivi and Sibulatee
Kallaste, Kolkja, Varnja, Nina and other villages around Sibulatee are suitable for those who want to combine a culinary experience with Old Believer culture and attractions around Lake Peipus.
Things to look for in the area:
- fish dishes;
- onion pies;
- preserves;
- pickles;
- homemade baked goods;
- samovar teas;
- products from local producers.
The food tour can be combined with a visit to Alatskivi Castle, the Kallaste sandstone outcrop or the villages along Sibulatee.
Mehikoorma, Räpina and Setomaa
The southern section of the route is suitable for visitors who want to combine the culinary traditions of the Lake Peipus region and Setomaa.
Alongside Lake Peipsi fish dishes, you can also discover the flavours of Setomaa, local dairy products, sõir, pies and other regional dishes here.
Driving from Vasknarva to Setomaa in a single day is not a good plan. The distance is long, leaving too little time to stop at restaurants, villages, and attractions. The southern area is best treated as a separate day trip.

How to plan your route?
The restaurants’ locations, menus, and activities will be published on the event’s shared map. According to the organizers, the complete map should be available in July.
When planning your route, first choose the region you wish to visit. Then mark four to six restaurants on the map that you definitely want to visit.
Check at each location:
- address;
- opening hours;
- menus and prices;
- parking availability;
- availability of card payment;
- children's programme;
- concerts and workshops;
- availability of vegetarian dishes or dishes suitable for people with allergies;
- the need for advance booking.
Choose a couple of backup options as well. There may be queues at the most popular places, and some dishes may sell out before the restaurant closes.
Sample one-day itinerary
A practical one-day culinary journey might look like this:
- arrival at the first restaurant at 11.00;
- trying a small snack or appetizer;
- visiting two or three nearby restaurants;
- a walk by the lake or in a local village;
- main course in the afternoon;
- dessert at the last restaurant;
- buying local products before heading home.
You do not have to order a full lunch at every restaurant. It is better to share different dishes with your companions or choose smaller portions. This allows you to sample more flavors from the Lake Peipsi region in a single day.
Can you visit Peipsi Toidu Tänav with children?
Yes. The event is designated as family-friendly, and some restaurants may offer activities, workshops or performances for children.
When travelling with children, it is worth choosing a compact route. Several hours in the car and too many stops can quickly tire younger children.
A good choice is an area where the following are located near the restaurants:
- a beach or lakeside recreation area;
- playground;
- park;
- museum;
- castle or manor;
- short hiking trail;
- an activity suitable for children.
Before setting off, check the official map to see which restaurants offer a children's programme and whether toilets and parking are available on site.
What to bring?
When visiting Peipsi Toidu Tänav, it is worth bringing:
- comfortable shoes;
- water bottle;
- clothing suitable for the weather;
- sun protection;
- an umbrella or rain poncho;
- cash;
- power bank;
- a cooler bag for takeaway food.
Although card payments will probably be accepted in many places, temporary restaurants may be located in areas where mobile coverage is not always reliable. It is therefore wise to bring some cash as well.
Why is Peipsi Toidu Tänav worth visiting?
Peipsi Toidu Tänav is more than just a food festival. It is an opportunity to visit small villages and home gardens that you might not otherwise discover on a typical weekend.
Visitors can meet local residents and producers, hear stories from the region, discover places along Lake Peipus, and see how Estonian, Russian Old Believer and Seto culinary traditions come together. The Peipsimaa tourism portal describes the region's cuisine as a meeting place of these three cultures and cuisines.
This event is particularly suitable for those who appreciate:
- local and seasonal food;
- small family businesses;
- homely cafés;
- peaceful road trips;
- the natural environment of Lake Peipus;
- local traditions;
- authentic encounters with local people.
The most important thing here is not to cover as many kilometres as possible. For the best experience, choose one area, take your time, and enjoy both the food and the journey.
