LG Electronics introduced the webOS platform for Kia vehicles in Europe, turning vehicles into “living spaces on wheels”
Cars are becoming multimedia centers
LG Electronics announced the launch of its webOS Automotive Content Platform (ACP) in Kia Corporation vehicles in the European market. The platform, which debuted in the recently unveiled EV3 electric vehicle, will also be installed in the upcoming EV4, EV5 and New Sportage models. This marks the expansion of LG's innovative in-vehicle entertainment systems into the European market following their successful rollout in Korea [1].
The LG ACP platform is based on the universal webOS system, which is already used on more than 240 million LG Smart TVs worldwide. Building on the TV platform's proven reliability and intuitive user interface, webOS adapted for cars offers drivers and passengers instant access to a wide range of content and services specifically tailored for in-car use.
“Living space on wheels”
ACP, as a key component of “LG AlphaWare”, a comprehensive suite of solutions for software-defined vehicles (SDVs), redefines the car as a true “living space on wheels”. The platform allows passengers to stream their favorite media content directly to the car’s infotainment system screen, providing an experience comparable to a smartphone or Smart TV while complying with road safety regulations [2].
Kia’s European model range offers a diverse selection of in-car entertainment, including popular content from platforms such as Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, LG Channels, Baby Shark World for Kids, Stingray Karaoke, Play.Works, Haystack News and Vasari. Later this year, the content library will expand to include Rakuten TV, Napster and the German OTT service Joyn. Available only while parked, these streaming services allow the car to be transformed into a private cinema, further expanding the car’s media ecosystem [3].
“By bringing the webOS Automotive Content Platform to Kia’s European model range, we are making it easy for people to enjoy their favorite media content wherever they go,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of the LG Vehicle Solution Company. “LG remains committed to strengthening partnerships and expanding our content ecosystem to deliver cutting-edge in-car entertainment and next-level connectivity.”
The trend toward in-car entertainment
The integration of streaming services into cars is becoming a notable trend in the automotive industry. Kia is joining the growing list of automakers that are turning their infotainment systems into media streaming devices while parked. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Tesla, and other manufacturers already offer similar features in their cars [4].
A vehicle data plan is required to access streaming services. Access to certain apps may require a separate subscription. It is important to note that the video viewing feature is only available while the vehicle is parked, in compliance with road safety requirements.
Technical features of the platform
The LG webOS Automotive Content Platform is part of the company's broader strategy for developing software-defined vehicles (SDVs). SDV technology allows vehicle functionality to be updated and enhanced through software without the need to replace hardware components.
The platform’s key features are:
•An intuitive user interface familiar to LG Smart TV users
•Support for popular streaming services
•Optimized for use in the automotive environment
•Integration with the car’s other systems
•Online update capability
The platform's debut in the Kia EV3 electric vehicle is no coincidence—electric cars often spend more time at charging points than traditional cars do at petrol stations, creating ideal conditions for using entertainment features while waiting.
Development prospects
The collaboration between LG and Kia in the field of in-vehicle entertainment systems is part of a broader trend of transforming cars into multifunctional spaces that go beyond being mere means of transportation. As autonomous driving advances, the importance of in-vehicle entertainment systems will grow even further.
LG continues to strengthen its position in the automotive industry, viewing automotive components as one of the key drivers of the company’s future growth. The company plans to showcase its latest automotive technologies, including vehicle infotainment systems, the webOS Auto content platform, and the LG Alphaware mobility software solution at the upcoming IAA Mobility trade show in Munich [5].
