What makes Tallinn’s bastion passages interesting?
Beneath the Old Town are the underground passages of the Swedish and Ingrian bastions, built in the late XVII — early XVIII century. Initially, they were part of Tallinn’s defensive system. Later, the underground spaces were used for various purposes, including as shelters and storage areas.
Today, it is part of the museum complex, where visitors can learn about the history of the city’s fortifications. The underground rooms, stone vaults and exhibitions offer an unusual perspective on Tallinn—not only as a city of medieval streets and towers, but also as a fortress with an extensive defensive system.
Important: 1 November is a regular free museum admission day. It is not a themed Halloween-programme or a special tour of the underground passages.
What can you visit for free on 1 November?
- Bastion passages — historic underground passageways connected to Tallinn’s defensive fortifications.
- Maiden Tower (Neitsitorn) is part of the medieval fortified complex of the Old Town.
- The first floor of Kiek in de Kök tower — part of the exhibition space at the fortifications museum.
Restrictions: floors 2 to 5 of Kiek in de Kök tower are closed to visitors on this day. Group guided tours and tours led by museum staff are also not available.
Due to renovation work, access to Maiden Tower is via Kiek in de Kök. Some rooms in Maiden Tower may be temporarily closed.

Can you visit the bastion passages with children?
For schoolchildren interested in history and unusual places, such a visit can be an enjoyable family outing. However, there are important considerations: the museum does not recommend going down into the bastion passages with children under 7 years old.
The temperature underground stays around +10…+12 °C throughout the year. It is advisable to bring warm clothes and wear comfortable shoes. The stair steps vary in height in places and can be slippery.
The underground passages are not recommended for people with claustrophobia, dizziness, balance disorders or limited mobility. Due to the nature of the historic building, wheelchair access is not possible. It is best to check with the museum in advance about visiting with a pushchair.
