Tallinn’s first drone classroom has opened

Tallinn's first drone training classroom has opened: children can try drone technology for themselves

Tallinn now has a place where children and young people can not only observe drone technology but also try it themselves.
On 18 September 2026, Tallinn's first drone classroom opened at Energia avastuskeskus, where practical drone training is combined with engineering, programming, electronics, physics and aviation.

The new drone classroom is intended for children and young people as well as Tallinn schools.
The goal is not only to teach drone piloting, but also to demonstrate through practical activities how modern technology actually works.

Drone technology clubs are already operating at Energia avastuskeskus, and from October 2026, Tallinn general education schools will be able to book separate drone education programmes.

What do children learn in the drone education class?

Drone education is not just about picking up a controller and flying. The lessons combine several fields that children often encounter as separate subjects at school.

🚁

Drone piloting
Using FPV and football drones in theory and practice.

💻

Programming
An introduction to the principles of controlling and programming technology.

⚙️

Engineering
Understanding how devices are built and why they work.

🧠

Problem-solving
Practical tasks, reaction speed and teamwork.

Drone technology clubs for 8–16-year-olds

In September 2026, Dronootika hobby clubs began at Energia avastuskeskus for two age groups:
for 8–11-year-olds and for 12–16-year-olds.

Both age groups use football drones and FPV drones and learn to fly them in theory and practice. The programme also includes flight and competition practice.

8–11-year-olds: FPV drones and football drones
12–16-year-olds: FPV drones and football drones
Classes: once a week
Lesson duration: 60 minutes
Language of instruction: Estonian

Drone education is also coming to Tallinn schools

The new class is not intended only for children who want to join a drone technology club.
From October 2026, general education schools in Tallinn can order drone education programmes from Energia avastuskeskus.

This makes it possible to connect the physics, mathematics and programming learned at school with practical tasks. Instead of seeing only a formula or a program on a screen, students can observe how their knowledge affects the movement and behaviour of a real device.

What is drone football?

One of the most exciting activities at Energia avastuskeskus is drone football.
It is a technology-based team game that uses drones with special protective frames.

The game combines drone control, coordination, quick reactions, and teamwork. At the same time, young people become familiar almost without noticing with technical skills that could seem much more difficult to learn from a textbook alone.

💡 Good to know

According to the current information from Energia avastuskeskus, public drone football sessions take place every day at
12.00, 14.00 and 16.00.
The schedule may change, so it is worth checking it on the centre's website before your visit.

Can drones also be tried without joining a hobby group?

Yes. The drone classroom does not mean that the only way to learn about drones is to enrol in a club for the entire academic year.

Public drone football sessions allow visitors to try the technology during a regular visit. In addition, Energia avastuskeskus has offered drone activities for children and young people at city camps.

Therefore, visiting the centre can also be a good first step for a child who has never flown drones before and is just trying to find out whether this type of activity suits them.

Who might particularly enjoy drone education?

Not all children are enthusiastic about the same hobbies. Drone education may be especially exciting for children or young people who enjoy:

  • robots and technology;
  • LEGO and construction;
  • computer games;
  • programming;
  • electronics;
  • aviation;
  • competitions and practical tasks.

A drone is immediately visible and understandable to a child: if something is changed in the controls, settings or program, the result can actually be seen. This is precisely what can make technology and the exact sciences much more interesting even for those who find conventional theory-based learning too abstract.

Practical information

📍 Location: Energia avastuskeskus

Address: Põhja pst 29, Tallinn

Dronootika extracurricular clubs: for children aged 8–11 and 12–16

Drone education programmes for schools: starting in October 2026

Public drone soccer sessions: according to the center's current information, at 12.00, 14.00 and 16.00

Why is the new drone learning classroom important?

Tallinn's first drone education classroom makes a rapidly developing field of technology much more accessible to children.
Instead of merely watching online how drones fly, children can control and test them themselves and learn what happens inside the device.

Drone education for children and young people has been developed at Energia avastuskeskus since March 2026 in cooperation with SA Tallinna Tehnika- ja Teaduskeskuse, Tallinna linna and HobiZone klubi as part of the Test in Tallinn project. The completion of the drone education classroom was funded by Tallinna linn.

The drone soccer field created as part of the Test in Tallinn program is intended to allow schools, students and other interested people to try drone soccer in a safe environment and combine it with engineering education.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can children study drone technology at Energia avastuskeskus?

In the 2026/2027 academic year, drone technology hobby groups are available for 8–11- and 12–16-year-olds.

Does the child need to have their own drone?

The hobby group's program uses FPV and soccer drones for teaching, and the published participation requirements do not require participants to have their own drone.

Can drones also be tried without joining a hobby group?

Yes. Public drone football sessions are held at Energia avastuskeskus, offering an opportunity to experience drone technology for the first time.

Can Tallinn schools use the drone learning classroom?

Yes. Starting in October 2026, Tallinn general education schools can book drone education programmes.
