A quarry safari is taking place at Aidu Quarry: a different kind of adventure in Ida-Virumaa
When a regular weekend getaway is no longer enough, it’s worth heading to Ida-Virumaa. On Saturday, 22 August 2026, a quarry safari takes place at Aidu Quarry, taking participants by off-road vehicles to places ordinary visitors usually don’t get to see. The safari starts at 11.00, and according to the organizer, the trip lasts approximately 1,5 hours.
Aidu makes this outing special even before you get into the car. Today, the former oil shale quarry has given way to a striking mix of pale blue water, steep banks, limestone fields and young forest. Mining here ended in 2012 and, after the pumping stations were shut down, the former haul roads filled with water, forming Aidu’s distinctive system of canals and artificial bodies of water.
This is not just a drive around the quarry
The quarry safari route passes through ditches, forest tracks and rough artificial terrain. Along the way are the quarry’s highest points, artificial lakes and canyons, and during the drive the guide talks about the area’s mining history, energy production and environment.
This is not a classic tour where you simply drive from one attraction to another. Part of the experience here is the landscape itself—ascents, descents, rocky ground and places that are not worth exploring in an ordinary passenger car.
What makes Aidu interesting is the contrast: parts of this former industrial area now look as if they belong to a completely different country, not Estonia.
Why does Aidu Quarry look so unusual?
Aidu Oil Shale Quarry operated from 1974–2012. After mining ended, the landscape began to change rapidly: former mining areas filled with water, and long canals and steep banks appeared in the industrial landscape.
It is the pale blue water together with the limestone landscape that gives Aidu its distinctive look. The Ida-Viru tourism portal describes the area as a fjord-like system of artificial bodies of water, where the forest is gradually taking over from the rocky wasteland.
That is why Aidu is also a good destination for people who are not particularly interested in oil shale or industrial history. You can come here simply to see one of Estonia’s most unusual landscapes.

Going with children?
Yes, but there is one important restriction: according to the organizer, the safari is suitable for those aged 6 and over.
With older children, this can be a very good alternative to a conventional museum day or adventure park, because a single outing combines nature, technology, industrial history, and a little thrill.
Families with younger children should look for another activity in Aidu or Ida-Virumaa.
What else can you do that day?
The safari starting point is next to Eesti Kaevandusmuuseum, so it makes sense to combine the day with a museum visit. The mining museum, in turn, gives you a much better idea of why the Aidu landscape became what it is.
The organizer also offers boat trips in Aidu, and 22 August one trip departs at 13.00, shortly after the safari. There is one important detail, however: as of 17 August, the 22 August boat trip had already sold out.
So when planning a full day, it's worth also considering, for example, Eesti Kaevandusmuuseum, the Kiviõli area, or other attractions in Ida-Virumaa.
Who is the Aidu quarry safari especially suitable for?
It's a good choice if you:
- want to see something truly different in Estonia;
- you like off-road vehicles and off-road driving;
- you're looking for an idea for a weekend outing;
- you are travelling with children aged at least 6;
- you want to combine nature and industrial history;
- you've seen Aidu's bright blue water channels in pictures but haven't visited yet.
Aidu quarry is a good example of how a former industrial landscape can become a completely new adventure area. And the quarry safari offers a chance to see much more of it than you can from the roadside or a viewpoint.
