Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat 2026: the Lake Peipus region's major end-of-summer fair takes place on 29 August
Kallaste Fish and Onion Fair 2026 takes place on Saturday, 29 August and brings local food, the famous Peipsi onion, handicrafts and end-of-summer fair atmosphere to the shores of Lake Peipsi. It’s a good reason to take a day trip and combine the fair with exploring Peipsimaa.
One of Peipsimaa’s biggest traditional end-of-summer events begins in Kallaste town centre at 10.00. According to the organisers, activities continue from morning until late at night, and the programme is intended for the whole family.
Kallaste Fish and Onion Fair 2026: when and where?
Date: 29 August 2026
Start: at 10.00
Location: Kallaste town centre and central square, Peipsiääre municipality, Tartumaa
Main performer: HUNT at 13.00 on the stage in Kallaste central square.
The 2026 fair has one more reason to visit Kallaste: according to the organisers, by then the renovated central square in Kallaste will also have been completed.
What is sold at the Kallaste fair?
The Kallaste fair is not just an ordinary summer market. Its strength lies in Peipsimaa’s local food and regional traditions.
The official list of goods for 2026 includes local onions, garlic, vegetables, seedlings, farm produce, honey, preserves and juices. In addition, smoked meat, bread, pies and other baked goods are sold, along with handicrafts, ceramics, wooden goods and knitwear. Hot food, including soup and shashlik, is also available, and cafés are open. The fair also offers industrial goods and antiques.
And of course, the Kallaste fair is inseparably linked with Peipsi onion.
This is not just a regional souvenir. The onions grown on the shores of Peipsi are the product of a labour-intensive tradition: the onion beds are built high, and much of the work is done by hand. ERR has reported that fewer and fewer people are involved in growing traditional Peipsi onions, so buying local produce is also one way to support the region’s old food culture.
HUNT takes the stage at 13
One of the most important programme announcements for this year’s fair is HUNT’s performance at 13.00 in Kallaste central square.
This also makes the day especially convenient for visitors coming from farther away: you can take your time getting to the fair in the morning, browse the local vendors and get something to eat, then listen to the concert.
According to the organisers, activities in Kallaste continue until late at night. However, it is worth checking for programme updates before setting off, as event information may still be updated.
Is the Kallaste Fish and Onion Fair suitable for visiting with children?
Yes—the organisers explicitly describe it as an event for the whole family. However, no separate detailed children’s programme has been announced at this time, so specific attractions or activities that are not yet listed in the official programme should not be promised.
For families, Kallaste’s main appeal is the whole-day combination: the fair, local food, a concert, Lake Peipsi and nearby sights.
Make the fair a whole Peipsimaa family day
If you travel to Kallaste from farther away, you don’t have to head straight home after the fair.
One of the easiest stops is right in Kallaste: Kallaste sandstone outcrop. According to Visit Estonia, it is Estonia’s longest Devonian sandstone outcrop—it has been measured at approximately 930 metres long and reaches a height of up to eight metres.
Another good option is Alatskivi loss. The white castle with its towers is located near Kallaste, where you can learn about the manor’s history, visit the Eduard Tubina muuseum and see other exhibitions.
This way, you can plan your 29 August day very simply: Kallaste in the morning, the fair and local food, HUNT at 13, and afterwards the shore of Lake Peipsi, the Kallaste outcrop or Alatskivi.
Why is this particular fair worth visiting?
The charm of the Kallaste Kala- ja Sibulalaat lies in more than just the number of stalls. It is one of those events where the place itself is at least as important as the programme.
Lake Peipsi, the atmosphere of the small town of Kallaste, local onions, farm produce, and the people who grow or make them themselves give the fair a character you won’t find at an ordinary market in a big city.
If you’re looking for a day trip with children, local food and something a little different from the usual for the last weekend of August, Kallaste on 29 August is a great choice.
